Scope note
Visual signaling devices used primarily in military applications, and most particularly between ships in close range. These constitute a bright, focused lamp that incorporates the ability to create intermittent bursts of light. These were used to transmit coded messages without the use of radio to remain undetected by enemies. Named for its inventor A.C.W. Aldis.
